Blog Post 14

I would like to focus on a science lesson emphasizing on designing an experiment on force.  This lesson would be for 5th grade students. They will brainstorm different ideas in which they can design experiments showing force.

I would like the students to master the concept of force and motion while focusing on experimental design. I would want the students to have the opportunity to experience and comprehend what force is and how it works.

The students have already studied force and motion in class and have done labs to supplement the lessons on force and motion. This lesson will build on that knowledge and incorporate the ability to design and create an experiment.

I will follow the scientific method and use Google Drive to set it up. They will present it using Google Slides. I would require them to upload pictures and record themselves conducting their experiment and post it on a slide. I would like them to use Pinterest to look up ideas and different designs when they are brainstorming.

The entirety of the lesson will take about two weeks. The first week will focus on the planning and gathering ideas. They will write out the scientific method and gather materials needed for their experiment. The following week will be dedicated to conducting several trials of their experiment and finalizing their Google Slide presentation.

The students will be given a rubric prior to the beginning of the process. It will focus on how well the students followed the entire scientific process. They must generate their question, form a hypothesis, collect data, test hypothesis, record results and draw conclusions. In addition, they will be assessed by how well they designed their experiment. The presentation on Google Slides will be another portion of their final grade. Creativity and individuality will also be incorporated into the rubric.
