Week 3

In my science lab classroom I see different grade levels from Kindergarten up to 5th grade students. I think that setting up a blog for my science lab will be beneficial in my classroom and I definitely plan to work on that very soon. Blogging for distribution purposes will be very useful when it comes to reminding students of their homework assignment. It will also allow parents to gain access to all the homework assignments their child receives, this will ensure that parents are aware of what their child is working on at school and should be doing at home. One way that I plan on using my blog, will be to remind students and parents about our school science fair. This will be great because I can post important dates and due dates. I plan on also posting ideas or links to different websites where families can get ideas for their science projects and links to different resources that they can access at home.
Blogging for discussion will be useful to allow students or parents to share possible science fair ideas. They can perhaps share a project that they have tried in the past or discuss in which stores they can find “hard to find items” for their science experiment. Another way I would like to use the blog for my 4th and 5th grade students would be to have them reflect on labs done in class. Since they conduct these experiments as a group this will allow all students to add their own observations.
Blogging for demonstration purposes is perfect for my science lab classroom. I would be able to post videos of labs done in my class. Students can rewatch the experiment done and they can also show their parent’s what they did. When they watch their lab again they can post a response to their lab experiment or add further research. One idea that I read on A Complete Guide to Using Blogger in School, and I thought was really neat was having students post audio reports about everything they learned throughout the week. I plan to have the 5th grade students create audio reports on soundcloud.com and post them onto the blog. This would be excellent later in the year when it is time to review for the Science STAAR test.  We can listen to the audio reports and watch the videos on the blog to review the content and prepare for the STAAR test.

  1. Claudia,
I love your idea of having your science students post their audio demonstrations on soundcloud.com. By the time the STAAR comes around, this will be an excellent refresher for the students. There is nothing better than a visual example, especially one that they have put their effort into. Science is such an engaging, hands on subject. It is an excellent resource for our kinestetic learners. I am sure that your students will remember you for a lifetime.

  2. Claudia,
I really think it is a great idea to keep parents informed about the science fair. We would be able to post different ideas for parents to find the type of project they would like to do with their child. Also maybe posting science page links that can take them directly to find information and the process of conducting the experiment. Maybe even to some youtube tutorials for that type of experiment/project.

  3. I like your idea of using the blog for parents to share Science project ideas. This will be beneficial to the parents because I've had parents come and ask what kind of projects they can do. Recording the audio on sound.com and listening to them later as a review is a way of refreshing their memory.

  4. Claudia, I like the idea that you have as to put important information about the science fair. By opening a blog in your classroom, or in your case your lab, then you are expanding your contact from just your students, to the parents/legal guardians as well. There are times where we share important information to the students and they are absent or forget once they get home, but by posting the flyers and documents on the blog, then they are able to access it or refer back to it from home.
